@optimystical51 is absolutely right. Cohen wrote Allelujah in 1984, then John Cale covered it in 1991 and then possibly the most famous (and truly amazing) rendition came from Jeff Buckley in 1994. Rufus recorded his version of Allelujah in memory of Jeff Buckley, after his premature death. His version was also used as part of the Shrek soundtrack.
