what is the name of the string instrument.
teoakinyel 2 years ago
Hi! that's an egyptian Rababa. Its a folk instrument traditionally to accompany sung poetry. Closely related to similar instruments in the near and far east.
2 strings, no frets. Picture a hollowed out half coconut stuck on a bedpost, with a skin over it. sounds like a voice, yes?
Peace

thanks. you seem well informed. what about the piece what is the tune.
teoakinyel 2 years ago
Thanks! I am the drummer on the left.
The piece is by the Rababa player on the right, Fikry el Gennawi, called "Saiidi Ana" . "saiidi" means southern, and in Egypt it refers to agricultural peoples ("fellahin") from villages in the South of Egypt. " ana" is "I". so the title means "I am of the south", or"I am saiidi". guess Neil Young already took "southern man" :)
Fikry's work is featured in several Egyptian Ministry of Culture ensembles. He is an amazing musician, teacher, and person
