In the October issue of French Vogue, which is dedicated to "Supermodels," there are no black models. No Naomi Campbell, no Tyra Banks, no Iman, no Alek Wek, no Liya Kebede, no Chanel Iman. Instead, Dutch model Lara Stone appeared in a 14-page editorial in blackface. Aside from the fact that models of many nationalities have gained a greater presence in the fashion industry and should have been used in this magazine, today in 2009 we should all know that white people dressing in blackface is offensive.

  • You hit it on the head for me. That's exactly what I was thinking. Why couldn't they have just hired a black model to do the spread? Iman, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Jessica White etc etc. It's like they're saying only a white woman is pretty enough to pull off modeling as a black woman. And they say racism doesn't exist in Europe. BS.

  • Blackface is never ok. It's racist and offensive. Why didn't Vogue just use a black model instead? Are they suggesting that there are no beautiful black models out there so they have to paint a white model black!!??

  • I don't believe it's racist. American blackface was generally an offensive stereotype of negative characteristics. But using beautiful supermodels as beautiful black models seems more an artistic statement than an offense.

  • Back in the 70's, there used to be a show called Dean Martin Roasts, a lot of those old shows are on youtube. There would be a panel of celebrities sitting on a stage with a podium at the center, and some Black celebrities of that time were often on the show.Everyone would basically crack jokes on each other, and A LOT of jokes would be considered EXTREMELY offensive on that show in our time. We'll have arrests over Politically "Incorrect" speech and expression before long.Welcome to Orwell's1984
