For nearly a year, Fairmont Hospital's day-to-day
operations have been putting patients and healthcare workers in danger.
At this public health facility, patients have been assaulting nurses to
custodians to other patients.

The patient mix at Fairmont Hospital has changed. Fairmont, a Skilled
Nursing Facility specializing in long-term care services after acute
hospitalization, now includes patients released from John George
Psychiatric Pavilion who need medical attention. Some of these patients
have histories of violent behavior and are psycho-socially unstable.

"Our hospital has seen patients with very hazardous cases being admitted
into our facilities without the hospital administration providing
adequate education to staff to deal with some of the patients," said
22-year Certified Nursing Assistant and SEIU 1021 member Pat Enoch. "Our goal is to provide
quality care for patients, but the lack of staffing and training is
putting patients and staff at risk of getting hurt."

  • Could it be that patients are turning violent because they are being forced to be some where they dont want to be? I dont know just a thought. I dont think the problem it the lack of security but the hospitols policy and thier ability to take your freedom based on a technicallity called a 5150 hold which basically turns a nurse or doctor into a Corretional Officer or prison Guard in the eyes of the patient.. just a thought
