If you could hook it up to your stereo, you would not believe how good those SD's sound shoving on the rear. The best sounding helpers I ever heard in my life. Location Lilly, PA. The rear helpers exhaust starts to get darker as it approaches the signal bridge, looks like it's dying.

  • Nothing on the caption says anything about the headend,If you are talking about what BNforever is mentioning, that is about another video I have on Youtube that are about three SD60 primovers puliing a 12,000ton coaltrain up a hill on Conrail's B&A mainline.

  • Your video of the screaming SD60 on the lead is amazing, I love it when they howl like that.

  • Oh ok. That is good to know. I guess it looks worse than it does. I was just did not look right te closer the unit go the darker the smoke.

  • Yes they do, and that sound was out of control

  • they are all on line, the last unit is on it's last leg I think

  • I was about 30feet away from the tracks

  • The 645E, king of all prime movers. Awesome video, this really brings back memories. Long live big blue!

  • Great footage! I never get tired of watching it. SD40s are shouting to the heavens and clawing the rail. I think they'll always be my favorite locomotives. Again, great video and sound - raw power

  • Still the best! When the video gets to 2:30, turn up the speakers until the end. The deep and loud roar sound of the 4 SD-40's is awesome and fantastic.

  • @np560 This is true. The last unit is pushing harder, governor, or throttle position higher than the other helper units. Not sure how that is set up, but I am a car technician, and I would bet that is the case.

  • The rumble of those C40-8Ws is awesome too, but I think the SD40s won.

  • always wondered is lilly,pa on a branch or the main line? because it looks like a main line track setup with the signals etc.

  • DID SOMEONE CALL FOR BIG BLUE?

The smoker on the end was still running full bore. Turbo's probably getting clogged on it, but you could still pull half a small town with it.

  • The GE's on the headend don't sound too bad either...

  • This is my all-time favorite YouTube video. If you've got good speakers the sound is incredible. Those radiator fans howling around that curve at the end are just great.

  • I agree with the video title. These are by far the best sounding SD40-2s ever. I like contrast between the higher-pitched whine and the deep rumble of the 645. It's too bad the 40s aren't out in numbers like they used to be.

  • Ghosts of the PRR all over this video!!

  • So this is why we railfan
