Ubud, Bali. July 15 2008. Funeral procession for Agung Suyasa, head of the Ubud royal family, who died March 28. In this parade he's being taken to the cremation grounds. In Bali this is a joyous occasion, since cremation releases your soul so that you may be reborn. There were several large floats in the parade, each followed by processional gamelan, known as beleganjur. Here's a closeup of one of the beleganjur groups.
Sorry, no. When we planned the trip we had no idea that this would be going on--it was sheer coincidence. Our flight out was early the next morning, plus it was my son's birthday (he's living in Indonesia) and he'd planned a party near the airport. So we had to leave right after the procession. The actual cremation didn't happen until later that evening.
