Tens of thousands of US soldiers are returning from Iraq with severe mental problems. They feel abandoned by the Bush administration and claim officials are trying to hide the true scale of the problem.
"They take veterans, emotionally destroy them, then throw them back into society and say 'OK, you're on your own'", laments Joyce Lucey. Her son, Jeffrey, committed suicide traumatised by his experiences in Iraq. For months before his death, he was vomiting on a daily basis. He had frequent nightmares and hallucinations and told an army psychologist he was planning to kill himself. Despite this, Jeffrey was denied hospital treatment. "There's an epidemic of suicides among our returning veterans" states Paul Sullivan from Veterans for Common Sense. He believes the government deliberately makes it difficult for ex-soldiers to access support to downplay the problem. "Top level employees were coming up with policies to block veterans with PTSD getting disability benefits and health care". Even veterans receiving treatment feel bitter about their experiences. "There's so many hoops and red tape to deal with", complains Steve Edwards. It's estimated that it takes 12 to 15 years for a PTSD claim to be properly dealt with. Now, in an attempt to reduce this delay, some ex-soldiers have launched a lawsuit aimed at forcing the Department of Veteran Affairs to overhaul its entire system.

I agree with both you guys...its a damn shame the soldiers dont stand against this shit, most of them know they are being used but they feel powerless...Look at 22:40, u name me ANY other job where your boss can assault u like that where u wouldnt knock his ass out?...But these soldiers are supposed to be robotic killing machines and come home 'normal'? Its just an illogical expectation!!

In this Independence Day I hope that everyone all look back at all past to the brave souls that stood up for what they believed in.

I will wonder, probably more than once, what it was would be enjoying such prosperity and freedom like we do today.

@mookixox Oh no he would of got knocked the fuck out. Wow they getting that bad now, when I was in if you put your hands on anybody , we going over to JAG and theres gonna be a trial in war conditions or not, we would deal with it when we got back to the rear. Im a GW vet and muslim and this whole news clip just makes me sick by having to relive this crap, fighting the VA for benefits, the treatment is nothing more than drugs that keep you doped up.Just a sad state we are in in this country.

@ramosay alot of meaningless statistics. Muslim countries aren't in those lists because they are /not/ some of the countries that public (or even report) such statistics. And even if they did, it's virtually impossible to actually file a rape case in a muslim country based on the severe restrictions they make (as well as the cultural bias against women filing such cases).
