My current set up in minecraft.
Small little shack.
Shaft down to bedrock, with a pool at the bottom just incase.
Mine area just above bedrock. I made a 2x2 tunnel that has 1x2 branches off it every third block that I mine out until I reach lava. Some of them go so far you can't see the end due to render distances.
On the way back up, that chicken would have been dead if the pool wasn't there. I found some leather in there before, and that's why I filled it with water. RIP Cow.
Up above are the farms. The tree farm, the sugar farm, and the wheat farm. All provide with more than enough of each. The hole by the chests leads to a water hole that allows easy filling of buckets.
The cobblestone building back at the surface is for storage, it can be expanded downward as need be.
