  • @thomasking55 those are line printers. they print a whole line at a time.

  • Those are "comb" dot matrix line printers. Instead of having a small head that goes back and forth, it has a really, really BIG head that runs the whole width of the paper, minimising the time it takes for the head to go back and forth. I'm sure they're a lot noisier than protrayed in this video though, especially with the cover open.

  • To be fair, they are line matrix - so they're barely moving the printhead at all - whereas a consumer dot matrix printer is firing as much as 360 times to print one vertical line (although, this theoretical 24-pin dot matrix might be firing 24 rows of dots in one pass, depending on how the printhead is laid out,) this printer probably only fires eight or so times. Granted, it's only printing one row of dots at a time, but there's a whole lot less printhead movement, so it can be MUCH faster.

  • Those look quick for dot matrix!
