When a body encounters heavy metals that do not belong there, a type of poisoning occurs. The medically indicated therapy to remedy this is chelation therapy. Chelation involves using a chemical in the body to bind with the heavy metals. This allows the metals to be eliminated from the body and the poisoning effects will disappear.
Doctors seeking to rid patients of heavy metals such as iron, arsenic, lead and mercury have used chelation since the 1930's. Arsenic, lead and mercury have no business in a body. A body does need iron, but could have an overload of it.
Lead poisoning is most commonly found in children who have been exposed to lead paint chips or dust. Some states now require testing for lead in children when they are given physical exams. Some professions also run the risk of lead poisoning -- those that involve soldering, welding, smelting or reclaiming batteries.
Mercury poisoning is probably most common because of mercury used in dental fillings. There are occupations that also have a risk of mercury poisoning, notably tannery work and taxidermists, people who manufacture batteries or thermometers and dental workers. Mercury poisoning can also occur from contaminated seafood.
