One of Joplin's delightfully floral rags, in which each movement organically grows from the last - proof of his genius. Played without repeats at the Keswick Jazz Festival 2007 with percussion supplied by Debbie Arthurs.

  • This swings along at just the right tempo. Slow enough to bring out the expressive melodies, but brisk enough to avoid torpor. A delight. Once again, Gill has the best version on youtube. of a really technically demanding rag/stride classic. Does anyone know anything about him??

  • Nick Gill here...Very kind of you, Konwajiro...Actually Joplin might have wanted it even slower, and hard to know what "swing" - if any - he would have injected. There are only 5 rather dodgy piano rolls that Joplin cut himself and no recordings. There are a remarkable number of excellent ragtime/stride pianists flourishing in the YouTube herbacious borders - I very much doubt if this modest offering is the best Gladiolus!

  • Absolutely superb, played with wonderful touch and fluidity, at the right speed.
