  • Genie Scott is a modern American HERO fighting ignorance!

  • @Cafeeine The problem is that she is head of the National Center for Science Education. She can't choose, for strategic reasons, not to be a scientist and be the voice of that organization. I don't think I am misrepresenting her position when the points I am making are related to "on record" statements she has made.

  • @Yakslipper It wasn't that clear from your comment, so I was putting it out there. I'm not completely in agreement with Scott on the issue myself, but I didn't her position to be misrepresented. Still, Scott's position right now is that of an activist, not a scientist, and I see her actions as a strategic move facing what is an irrational and unreasonable crowd.

  • @Cafeeine I was very specific about where she and Ken Millar seem to agree...I think I know thay disagree on the issue of religious belief. My point is not that we don't have a common enemy, but that Scott is straying away from science and poorly representing it when she claims that religion and science are "different ways of knowing." She does science a disservice by making these claims.

  • @Yakslipper Not exactly identical. So far as I know, Scott is an atheist. I do agree that she's trying to be accommodating to believing scientists. The problem is that the "easier" creationist target is actively trying to make inroads into the educational system, and is arguably a bigger threat than moderate religious people who maintain belief by adapting their religious outlook to fit with the scientific one, rather than the other way around. "My enemy's enemy is my friend", in other words.

  • Tons of my pet peeves... this needs to be passed around :)

  • I'm sure that is a very important lesson for a lot of writers of science articles and others. There are too many bad articles by "ordinary" journalists in our daily papers.

But the people on the "desk" will never learn ;-(

  • Good intelligent speech. Well done, Dr. Scott!

  • Intelligent Design: For the unintelligent, everything seems to be designed by someone smarter than them.

  • This is perhaps the best speech I've heard of Dr. Scott.
