Are the Pedouins Reality Show Wannabe's, who compromised the welfare of their young children for self-promotion? UPDATE 2011: once Pedouins--Now Buswins travel via Bus, not bicycle--promoting spending winters north of Fairbanks Alaska where temperatures drop below -40F--however, this winter they are in a much warmer climate--Kentucky...
Bill and Amarins Harrison are seen here in Southeastern TN. on 8/12/09 near the Georgia border taking their 2 thru 5 year old daughters on a dangerous (even for adults) 7,000 mile bicycle ride from Kentucky to Alaska. Residents as well as Law enforcement in Polk County TN., did not see their proposed 7000 mile stunt as cute or endearing--
Any parents considering a "Copycat" excursion should be aware of how dangerous this cross-country escapade was........."We're halfway across the lane when the rear wheel locks up. I know by the sudden thud and the feel of the bike that it is serious. I holler to Ama, "Hold the bike up!" In an instant, I hop off and see that the chain is wrapped around something. There is no going forward or backward! There is no time to get the girls off or to disconnect our fully loaded trailer.
Our damn bike is stuck halfway across the eastbound lane of State Road 72 in Western Arizona. The eighteen wheeler barrels out of the sun straight for us and is showing no signs of slowing or getting into the westbound lane, which is empty for miles. Silhouetted against the afternoon sun, smoke billowing from its stacks and warped by the atmosphere, it looks like some demon come to take us.
My mind flashes an image of Amarins and the girls in a bloody pile at the side of the road, the bike blown to pieces down the highway. The Dad Instinct kicks in and I bark at Ama to grab the rear of the bike and pull with all her might. Veins bulging, muscles straining, we drag the 500 pounds of bike, girls and gear off the road. We've barely cleared the yellow line when the truck barrels past us like we're not even there. Sand and gravel flicks from under its wheels against us, the bike, and the girls. I notice his California tags, which does nothing to lessen my redneck prejudices of the Golden State, as I watch him scream away to the east.
We sit on the sandy roadside, our hearts beating like Masai drums. We try to calm our three girls; Cheyenne (6), Jasmine (4) and Robin (3). They are crying and want off the bike; NOW! Ama and I are yelling and upset and it transfers directly to the girls. Kids reflect our feelings exactly."
