It would be a lot better if you double layer it using epoxy glue.Then even if it cracks, the glue would hold it together a little more, lessening the chance that your own "armor" becomes shrapnel lodged in your body..

I think the ceramics are based on borosilicate glass. Actual SAPI plates are hard and strong. Perhaps powdered borosilicate in epoxy sintered under great preasure between carbon fiber or kevlar layers would be cheap enough and actualy work.

Mythbusters used ceramic tiles like that and were successful with bulletproofing. Start watching the show.
