In the previous and following video series of cursive and semi-cursive sample characters, I write about 50 characters and select about 10 of the better ones to use in each video. Of course, there are many times of retrials, errors, and unsatisfied strokes since it is not easy to control the motion of the brush in quick turnings. The benefits and purposes of practicing cursive styles are to make brushstrokes easier when practicing calligraphy, Chinese painting, or other visual arts.
對 (correct, right)
帝 (emperor)
浮 (float)
法 (method / 法國 = France)
不 (no, not)
常 (often, usual)
痛 (pain)
季 (season)
序 (sequence, order)
三 (three)
This is a beautiful example BUT BUT BUT......
Can you please do some MORE where I can see your hand moving as well.
I would love to see:
How far your hand is up the brush
and
How your hand, fingers and wrist move together with your arm as well as the character being writtwn.
:)
Well done.

Its very strange the caligrapher holds the brush high up in the air??? very different from pen writing or Western calligraphy, why???

Holding a Chinese brush is different from penwriting since a Chinese calligrapher applies more momentum and gains more freedom and speed when holding the brush in higher position.

Hi Neil,
I have added the hand motion in newer videos and you may find the arm motion in earlier videos. The position of the hand relative to the brush handle is based on the characters' sizes, writing speeds, and calligraphy styles; there is no fixed rule as everybody is different.
