Kiwano melon tasting

So I was at HyVee the other day with my mom and saw this yellow-orange, spikey, seemingly alien object sitting in the fruit section. Of course, with that description I had to buy one. Just purchasing one of these alien beings cost me a whooping $5.99 (plus tax), but I couldn't resist.

I took the being home and saw the name "Kiwano" on its produce sticker. It also stated it was grown in New Zealand. Since I had no idea how to actually eat this speciman, I turned to the internet. A lovely WikiHow told me this fruit actually originates in the Kalahari Desert (that's in Africa for the uninformed). After reading how to cut and eat this melon, I had a go at it and documented the journey to share with you all.

If a Kiwano is picked unripened, then allowed to ripen, it will taste like a mix between a cucumber and a kiwi. If it is picked ripened, it supposedly tastes like a banana.

I encourage you to try this interesting fruit sometime!

(My mom found out using a spoon is much easier, but then the deliciousness doesn't last as long.)

@chelano weird. I totally thought it was cucumber-y. Not quite sweet not quite sour. But it is said that there are different tastes based on when the melon is picked.

It is from African also known as the African cucumber.
