A community play area in Buckley has received a much needed boost thanks to the work of local residents and partner agencies.

The area, known locally as the 'Flash' has been transformed into a community garden and park with funding from various agencies including North Wales Police, the Big Lottery Fund, Welsh Assembly Government and Flintshire Community Safety Partnerships.

Today, Thursday 12th June, the area was officially opened by Dr Brian Gibbons, Assembly Minister for Social Justice and Local Government. He said: "This is one of 600 similar projects throughout Wales that is being supported by the Assembly Government.

"The projects are making a huge difference and are all about harnessing good will and community engagement."

The area, situated next to Bistre Church, previously suffered vandalism and anti-social behaviour. It also lacked in play facilities for children, families and young people.

Local Community Beat Manager PC Chris Pullen said: "This project was a vision of the young people of Buckley who wished to develop the area to encompass a safer greener environment which would make the area less vulnerable to crime.

"The FLASH project is all about working together and this would never have been done without the support of the community. I am extremely proud to be part of this exciting initiative and would like to thank everybody who has been involved in making it possible."

The area now hosts a park with excellent facilities for children, a Remembrance Garden and in the future, a MUGA (Multi use games area) will be created.

District Inspector Alun Oldfield said: "We are looking forward to the continuous community spirit that's been shown so far. We have had overwhelming support from Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch, local businesses and the local council.

"I am confident that the area will be used by the local community for many years to come."
