On August 5th 2010, Gary Lucas ("One of the best and most original guitarists in America"--Rolling Stone) made his mainland China performing debut at the Chinatown Shanghai club in Shanghai, concentrating on material from his celebrated 2001 album of 30's Chinese pop "The Edge of Heaven", recently reissued by Knitting Factory Records and distributed by Sony/Red. A tribute to Shanghai 30's film divas Chow Hsuan and Bai Kwong, the songs combine Western swing, Broadway and Tin Pan Alley influences with Chinese elements--http://www.garylucas.com/epk. Here Gary is joined by Shanghai-based vocalist Sally Kwok performing Bai Kwong's wistful "If I'm Without You" before a full house in the packed club, housed on the site of a former Shinto temple and redolent with the flavour of Old Shanghai.
