  • @sirjeffbobb WEll, that is really interesting.. It wasn't m grandmother, she didn't play guitar. But, I bet My Mother could tell you who this person was, In Hank's band. My Mother's name was Alberta Rose, ( when she performed on the Stampeed), Now, my mom knew Marty Robbins and she knew The Solemn Old Judge, who founed the Grand Old Opry.. My mother could probably tell you about that person, if You PM me your E mail, I will E mail to My Mother,Neat stuff!! My Mom was from Rocky Mtn. House

  • @savgal1211 Hello, savgal1211, I am very interested in what you have to say. I purchased a Gibson L5 from a man in his mid 80's in Chwk BC som years ago. He said his wife used to play for Hank touring Canada in the 50's. They had moved to BC to escape the intense cold. She had passed away some years ago and he said he wanted the guitar to be played. He literly dug it out of a closet, no strings, but he had all the parts. I was wondering if this was the woman; your grandmother?

  • Hank was a very close friend of my Mother's, he called my Grand mother "Mother" as Hank had no family. My mom was a performer many yrs ago on the Calgary Stampeed and Met Hank, as he is from Nova Scotia. Hank used to come over to the house and drink a vodka and OJ and sing at the kitchen table. I have some old reel to reel tapes we are restoring with misic and talks with Hank, great fun!! He toted my sister on stage at the Opry when she was ababy, I NEVER lived that 1 down!!

  • Has anybody else noticed that at exactly 2:00 the transition makes Hank Snow look like Admiral Ackbar? I'm a huge fan of the music, but it's just an observation. I also want to say that My younger brother was born in the very same day Hank Snow died, on December 20th, 1999. He's 12 now, and my dad nicknamed him Hank.

  • @Blogdoovian 1:36 that swell is the steel guitar.

  • @Palexb14 "Kayton toured the world with Hank Snow's Rainbow Ranch Boys as well as the Grand Ol' Opry. After Hanks passing in 1999 Kayton continued to perform, recording with a whose who of music legends. John Fogerty, Allison Krauss,George Jones, Hank Williams the 3rd and many others."--Kayton Roberts website--He has videos posted on YouTube--He plays the steel guitar.

  • @Palexb14 and @squirrelnutcased thanks y'all! My ear's a mite less tinnish now.

Btw in my opinion this is the 2nd best version of the song. Mr. Cash's take on his Live At San Quentin album still holds the gold for me because it's wilder & rawer. Johnny sounds like he just got news of the wreck. Mr. Snow's version is more polished and restrained. But they're both excellent and belong in the Great American Songbook. Hit that whistle!

  • @Blogdoovian Its a steel guitar

  • @Blogdoovian I'd guess a fiddle or a steel guitar is what's doing that. If it's a guitar I wanna figure out how the heck that player did it.

  • One of the great train songs...really catches the feel of a locomotive barreling along at high speed. My ear's a bit tinnish so what instrument is imitating the whistle howl @1:36...is it a fiddle or guitar?
