The black blocks can slide separately in the conveyor cleats' grooves. underneath the top side of the conveyor there's a (pneumatic) guide rail that is directing the blocks sideways.
On the bottom (return) side o f the conveyors there's a fixed guide rail that is re-ordering every black block to the same side, so when the chain returns to the top side they can be diverted again.

This video would be good, if I didn't know what a sorter conveyor function was.
I was thinking that the video was going to inform me on "how it works", this is why I was let down.
