a.k.a. "According to the Act", a chantey that responds sarcastically to the overly precise Mercant Shipping Act of 1894.

Sure, I had a memory slip in the last verse...but I played it off as intentional drama ;) The song is quite a tongue-twister.

The same tune has been used for many ballads, including "Good Ol' Rebel" (a post Civil War Confederate song), "Sink the Bismarck" (about the WWII battle, by Johnny Horton) and "Wallaby Stew" (an Australian ballad).

:-) Look at it in a positive light: if it weren't for me, this song would still be black dots on a page and most people reading it would not know what it sounds like. At least you can now correct the 'key' in your imagination! As for mine, I imagine the sailors singing these collected songs did not all have great pitch ;)

not the only rendition anymore. There's a chorus rendition by some Dutchmen.

I know this chantey but in its Polish version ("Na cytryniarzu", but it is not on YT).
