The Banjo and it's style of playing has come to be a part of Country music/Bluegrass of he United States. This style of music that most have labeled as White Music under the impression of it being of Southern white origins, is actually derived from the Senegambia region of west Africa, carried over to the U.S. by Senegambian slaves.

This is just one example of how African Americans managed to carry over their culture from Africa and influence the culture of the U.S and the world—despite slavery.

  • To my knowledge as an African Banjoist. The Hamitic, and Cushite has no association with the banjo origins. They might adopted as the Nothern America claiming that Banjo is an American instrument which is not true.

African Banjo is part of the BANTU ethnic group, and thus how ended up in Northern America in time of slavery.

Let us share to correct. and share about the African banjo history in deepth.

    Thanks,

    Essau Pwelle

    African banjoist.

  • @Africanbanjo The Hamitic/Cushite association that WESTERN EUROPEANS assigned as only applying to horn africans is their own flawed classification. All of us africans traditionally trace back to the people of Kham/Khami (Ham) and Kusu (Kush) as well as Misiri (Mizraim) and the rest of their descendants. So yes all Africans descend from those ones, those are our ancestors as passed down in tradition from the land of Cush and Misiri.

  • this sounds sweet

  • tap dancing did not come frome ireland it came froim africa caried to europe when the moores controled the europeans and mixed in with irish people thats why you have black irish and white irish

  • He should put down that big bluegrass banjo and let the africans play.

  • FOR ME THIS SOUNDS IRISH VERSUS AFRICAN

  • africans are so musical with there Oud, Banjo, Guitar, and drum skills.

  • @Africanbanjo Mr. Pwelle I beg to differ. The Mande language may be categorized in the Niger/Congo group of languages but they are NOT Bantu. The Banjo while may be influenced by the African diaspora is an American instrument. This is not to say it is European but like American music it's influences could come from Africa as well as Ireland. An example would be tap-dance- while American it's influences came from Africa, Ireland & mainland Europe clog-dancing.

  • What documentary is this from?

  • What a great little video - shame it wasn't ten times as long, but thank you for a great reminder of The Gambia/Africa and also the wonderful music.

  • The banjo went home, and it sounded beautiful!
