You may have trouble with the law walking the interstates in California. I know people who got hitchhiking tickets for walking. They said they were not hitching, only walking, but it did not matter to the police. I would recommend you get a bike with a flat tire and push it if those laws are still on the books there and you plan on walking it. No law against walking a bike.

Well, the only encounter I've had before this was with 'security' outside of a refinery along the border of Delaware and Pennsylvania.
So, this would be the 'real' police.
