Speaking of the way Scorsese uses cutting, I notice more than anything the length of time that he leaves the camera on an object before cutting. Like in "The Aviator" he'll cut to a shot of somebody's dinner, then cut to a closer shot, and then cut away. He never leaves it there for very long, only long enough to let you see it and then it goes away. A very tense filmmaking style.
