A veteran family and trauma-recovery therapist proposes that "Narcissism" ("Narcissistic Personality Disorder") and "egotism" are SYMPTOMS of underlying psychological wounds from early-childhood abandonment, abuse, and/or neglect. To reduce these symptoms, focus on reducing the underlying wounds. For more info, see http://sfhelp.org/gwc/links1.htm

  • Think narcissistic traits and Narcissistic Personality Disorder may be two different things. Narcissists aren't in love with themselves, they completely submerge their real selves, and fall in love with another 'self', fleshed out in the mirrors of their adoring suppliers. NPD may well be a result of earlier childhood trauma, an early injury to the formation of the self, not sure how that genesis makes it any less of a real disorder though.

  • @MikaShelley99 I believe the traits are caused by personality fragmenting and the dominance of a protective "false self" resulting from early-childhood abandonment, abuse, and/or neglect ("trauma"). The "Disorder" is a SYMPTOM of this fragmenting,.

  • @MikaShelley99 Your insight to what a NPD is is really powerful. I appreciate everyone who knows the difference between Narcissistic Traits and NPD. Thank you for your wisdom and understanding of such a complicated matter. It makes the lives of NPD's easier when we are not mistaken for something that is chosen.

  • Or it could be just plain stupidy... as I recall the following quote.

"Egotism is the anesthetic that dulls the pain of stupidity." - Frank Leahy
