Very rare video shows tool use in the mandrill monkey.

The first portion of the video shows a male mandrill using a rock as a tool. He is using it to hit the glass and wood. He may be using it to make a hole and escape, or to knock something out of the wood.

Videos of tool use in mandrills may not exist and it may have not been reported whether they use tools. This may be the first video of tool use in the mandrill.

In the second portion of the video, he searches for sticks. Finally he finds a large one and appears to use it to probe the fence a little. After this, he bites off a portion. Video shows his large teeth and coloration. The canine teeth may be 2 inches long.

Chimpanzees and humans also use stones and rocks for tools.

The Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate belonging to the Cercopithecidae (Old-world monkeys) family, and closely related to the baboons and even more closely to the Drill. Both the Mandrill and the Drill were classified as baboons in genus Papio, but research has determined they should have their own genus, Mandrillus.

The Mandrill is the world's largest kind of monkey. The word mandrill means "man-ape" according to the Oxford English Dictionary. They are famous for their bright colors. They are almost human sized. The males can weight up to 110 lbs. They can live for over 30 years. They eat about anything including some meat that they kill. Mothers bond with daughters, but males leave on maturity.

  • he looks deadly, just look at those jaws and teeth!

  • Mandrills are monkeys, not apes! Apes don't have tails! They're not the same thing! Aaaahhhhh!!!!!

  • mandrills scare me

  • Man...I wish i could shapeshift. Then I would hang out with so many different animals and learn from them. Can you imagine just chilli' with this guy?

  • @n0hav0cyet16 lol @ more civilized behavior.

We're the only species that tries to preserve other species and save them from extinction.

  • @n0hav0cyet16 monkeys and apes fight and kill for the same reasons we do. They even lie and have political motivations.

  • Mandrils are the biggest monkeys, they are not apes...

  • IMO animals all around us seem to have much more civilized behavior than we do. They know their place on Earth and they don't cross their lines in society. We always have wars and mostly kill eachother either due to emotion or jealousy, but life itself mainly kills for protection and survival. I know I said this in an unusual manner, I apologize...

  • @betterthanbrad I'm not too sure, but I do know that baboons come across chimps, they even fight, I saw a video where baboons try to eat a baby chimp right after it was born, and chimpanzees kill and eat baboons.

  • @tohidefromourways we're still great apes
