Woody Hermans Herds were among the greatest of the swing bands of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. This 1964 TV appearance features Hermans late group, the fifteen-piece Swingin Herd. Woody and the band perform some of his greatest hits, including Woodchoppers Ball, Four Brothers, Caldonia, and his theme song Blue Flame. Pianist Nat Pierce is the featured guest.

  • Billy Hunt's solo over the Four Brothers tenor sound is so tasteful and perfect for the setting (a lost art?), plus the seamless way he navigated over the "changes" in the modulation and set up the "shout" chorus is reminiscent of how Don Fagerquist did those same things with Gene Krupa, Woody's "New Third Herd" and the Les Brown Band of Renown. I sure I am showing my age saying how much I miss hearing that kind of playing.

  • Billy Hunt was one of Woody's most underrated soloists

  • @murnien : i miss hearing guys your age tell me about seeing Krupa and Les Brown live. Fagerquist is only a legend for me, but every time is hear him, I shake my head. As for Billy Hunt, well, you nailed it.
