I mentioned awhile back that i'd be reviewing some of my favorite weapons from Sentai shows. Since the transition from show prop to toy is usually a horrible one (I use the word "usual" lightly here) I only have a select few favorites that I actually own. So why not begin with pretty much everybody's favorite: the Zyusouken!

Until Zyuranger weapons were pretty blocky and generic. They were something that were given to most Sentai teams as conveniently as the script could make it. In Zyuranger...they actually had to *earn* their weapons. They had to track them down and fight through Bandora's gathering of mosters before they could get them. So right off the bat...you could really tell that this series took it's weapons seriously for pretty much the first time in Sentai history.

So maybe Dragonranger Burai didn't have to really do anything to get his weapons, but it's just as special. The Zyusouken is an all-in-one dagger that can play music, summon Dragoncaesar, teleport, and be used as a weapon.

So how does the toy stack up? Well, it might not be as awesome as the one in the show...but it's still impressive. It's big strength is that the one in the show isn't very big to begin with, so the toy hasn't been scaled down too much. Once you pop in the 2 AA Batteries and attach the mouthpiece, this badboy will be ready for use.

To activate the three tunes this plays, you must hold down the mouthpiece while pressing the button of the tune you want to play. There are three tunes to choose from. There is also the sword-slash sound that can be played without having to press the mouthpiece. This is a very interesting gimmick. It may seem a little irritating, but somebody at Bandai was being creative with this one...

The detailing is pretty good aswell. My only gripe is that the Dragon coin is facing the wrong way. Rather than being horizontal, it should be vertical. If you look at the picture on the front of the box, you can clearly see that the coin is facing the other way, while the toy is...just wrong. Other than that, the details are all great. All around a great addition to the Dragonranger Henshin Series wiith the Dragon Buckler (ドラゴンバックラー)

This toy was released in the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers line as the Dragon Dagger. First, in 1994, the Dragon Dagger was released and based very closely of the Zyuranger version. The main differences were that the mouth piece was permanently attached to the dagger and that the Dragon Coin was facing the right direction. Bandai America corrected a mistake Bandai Japan made...unbelievable! Also different were the three tunes that played. Bandai America replaced the second tune with a rendition of the MMPR theme song.

The Dragon Dagger has made a recent appearance in the Power Rangers toy line for the revamped Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers 2010 airing. This new version has nothing to do with the Zyusouken or the 1994 Dragon Dagger.
