Maxine Salon colorist Leslie Shores on the art of balayage, a highlighting technique that creates beautiful, lasting, natural-looking results. One of the most exciting highlighting color technique to appear in a long time, balayage (also known as hair painting) looks natural and organic, similar to the effortlessly random color you'd receive after a summer at the beach. In this video, Leslie adds soft caramel highlights to a beautiful brunette.

  • Is Leslie Shore's hair done with the same technique?

  • gorgeous!

  • @dreadlockscayman

that's why I think it's great to share (for the above technique) that covering each balyage section with plastic is key, if you are going to do this free hand technique. plastic/foil, same idea. hair color always processes at room temp, with a foil.,So the idea is when using lightener, use the plastic covering.

  • beautiful! I want caramel highlights but am afraid to mess my hair up!

  • Great tips

  • I have darker brown hair that is highlighted with foil. Can I ask for this technique when I go back in for my touch-up and still have it look more natural? I like the look a lot better and less maintenance is a pulse :)

  • does it work if your hair is already blonde? As in can you paint it the opposite way painting the darker colour on and leaving the light blonde at the bottom?

  • results but without using a strong lightener, easier to blend different tone, no drying of bleach and the ability to replace as much pigment (low lights) as I like. Foils give me more flex...period. This Balyage technique has been around since the beginning of time. Amazing how it is being pushed as the NEW great Techniqe. Guys...just my opinion.

  • It is mind blowing to me that people do not realize that you can achieve this look with foils. I do it everyday. If you place long foils onto a board and part the hair the same way you do balyage you can achieve this. I sweep and place my lightener the same a Balyage and leave my foils unfolded. Then I place another full length foil right over it. Why do this...no one I know can achieve great results with Balyage without upping the Volume of of developer. With the foils I achieve the same ...

  • What color highlight did you use on her? Thanks!
