MaximsNewsNetwork: ( http://www.MaximsNews.com ) 31 January 2012: United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia-Pacific, UN ESCAP, Bangkok, Thailand -- Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN ESCAP discusses the rights and development of Women and Girls in the Asia-Pacific region.
Since taking office in August 2007 as the first woman to ever occupy this position, Dr. Heyzer has championed institutional change and developed ESCAP as a regional hub to help build stronger economic and social foundations for sustainable and inclusive societies in the Asia Pacific region.
Dr. Heyzer has been cultivating regional co-operation and strong partnerships to mobilize support and harness new energies to address shared development concerns, striving for common prosperity, social progress, stability and ecological sustainability in a region challenged by high growth with growing inequalities and persistent poverty.
She has championed energy, food and water security as well as green growth in the Asia Pacific region.
In response to the current economic crisis, Dr. Heyzer has worked with member States to develop more coordinated, integrated regional responses.
She has championed building the foundations for social protection and has promoted increased intra-regional trade and investments in sustainable, inclusive infrastructure that create economic corridors linking Less Developed Countries to economic centres in the region.
Before her appointment to ESCAP, Dr. Heyzer was the first Executive Director from the South to head the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
During her tenure she increased its resources tenfold, strengthened its ground presence and successfully advocated to put issues affecting women high on the agenda of the whole United Nations system.
Among her many accomplishments there, she played a critical role in the Security Council's adoption of the landmark resolution 1325 in which the Council for the first time recognized the impact of war on women, and women's contributions to conflict resolution and peace.
Dr. Heyzer received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of Singapore, and a doctorate in social sciences from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
