Typical MO interview! Every time he is mentioned, they bring up Tubular bells, it was not his best work, and he has gone on to record some incredible stuff since. Imagine every single interview with the Beatles, and them saying, "So what inspired you to write Please Please Me?"... By the way, I've never heard of vangelis kitaro ray lynch and ryuichi sakamoto, we can all spout off about better composers, guitarists, drummers, keyboardist etc, but Mike O does the lot on his own. Mike IS a genius!

@Coneman3 vangelis kitaro ray lynch and ryuichi sakamoto are genius, oldfield had some good albums but is too repetitive simple and boring, he had his time in the 70's and in amarok, but you can't compare this man to those , in the other hand he is much more famous and richer than the others, but again fame doesn't give it all....!

Go on Mikey;) YOU ARE THE BEST

reckon hes been at the Vino and why not? Smashing bloke and a true musical genius
Calling Oldfield's music repetitive, simple and boring means you must be a cloth-eared nincompoop. His music is the opposite of those adjectives. His versatility and originality are i believe unmatched and the quality of some of his melodies and compositions is astonishing. He will be given more credit in the future than he is now, and his early/mid period works are generally far better than more recent material.

He comes across as a very modest, self-deprecating individual. TB is not simply a copy of Bach's music but Mike leads people to believe that. I think he used to believe in his music more, but seems to have fallen prey to other people's perceptions of it now. This shows through in his recent compositions IMO. I can't understand how he can't realize what a genius he is.
