NOTE: There's some significant video lag in this; audio is fine.

Basically: I rant about the new Star Trek movie, which I thoroughly enjoyed until I started thinking about it.

Briefly: I liked it, but where's the depth that used to be the hallmark of Star Trek? Why do we no longer demand that in Star Trek?

  • I think you are absolutely right. Unfortunately, a general audience doesn't care about philosophical depth as long as there are at least 3.5 explosions per 10 minutes of film. So, that is the film they made. I honestly believe that it is possible to make a Star Trek film that is deep and has broad appeal. I really have to wonder if they just aimed to take elements that "worked" in the past (time travel, revenge, green women) and crammed it into 120 minutes and slapped a label on their "product".

  • This is just a generic blockbuster movie. It was actually kinda boring actually.

  • You sound like a romantic.

I love it & can appreciate you for your opinions.

Summer blockbusters are not about appreciation for The Original Series.

It's all about selling tickets, action figures, gear, overpriced soda, popcorn and candies in a box.

JJ did that. Did he pay homage to TOS... Heck no! That was not why he was hired. The reality of it is that more new/young teens go to the movies and buy things. He HAD TO capture them moreso than winning Trekkies & Trekkers over. The Truth.

  • You're right, but this franchise was given to JJ Abrams to sell tickets to the general public and not to market just to the Trekkies or Trekkers. It was a great summer blockbuster; good story, great action, humor, attractive characters and good acting.

True - it was not a 'Star Trek' film with the questions of humans and this does not inspire you to become a scientist or doctor or polyglot, but it did get people's butts into the theatre and sell tickets. The GP is too dumb to appreciate TREK.

  • I've not watched much Star Trek, but I enjoyed this film. I wish there was more to Romulans apart from just looking like pissed off ugly bald men. They looked too much like stereotypical bad guys.

I think the first film did what it had to, reboot the franchise and make a believable plot with a new time line.

The next films can then go back to doing what Star Trek does best.

  • I completely agree! I had a few problems with the movie when I first saw it, but it wasn't until I saw an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" last week that I was reminded of how smart 'Star Trek' used to be. Usually 'Star Trek' leaves me thinking after seeing a show or film. This movie just had me going, "Yeah, that was cool!"...and that's about it.

  • This is a totally accurate review of the new movie. Although I liked it less. I found the story terrible, the villain uninspired and just zero going on in terms of depth

  • ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........

  • My thoughts exactly but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because as a motion picture....it was extremely lacking.

The first time I came out of this movie, I sat in my car and thought to myself, why do I feel so empty or so unfulfilled ? And after thinking about it, for a while, it was because this movie was just your A typical- summer blockbuster- action flick. Nothing more. No depth, no true Villain, and a horrible and unrealistic plot.

As a Trekkie...I can nitpick apart every scene.

  • Thank you!
