Northwest Flight 188 Overshooting Destination-1

Two pilots of a Northwest Airlines flight Wednesday 21 October 2009, were apparently so distracted that they missed their airport and kept flying for 150 miles on their flight to Minneapolis from San Diego before landing the plane and its 147 passengers safely.

For one hour and 18 minutes, the pilots -- flying at 37,000 feet above sea level -- were radio silent with air traffic controllers, who at times tried to reach the cockpit.

The pilots of the Airbus A320 told the FBI and airport police that they were in a heated discussion over airline policy and they lost awareness of the situation.

@rj1982ii I agree.....why were the fighters only put on alert. I am not advocating they go up there and shoot them down but if I looked out the cockpit window and saw a fighter jet on my 3 or 9 it would get my attention!

The air traffic controller should have notified the government of a missing airplane. But they didn't and passed the problem to another airport.

I don't know but the F-18s would have gotten their attention to something's wrong. I don't think it would have come down to shooting it down.

Oh yeah I always argue in my sleep. What scares me is the military didn't send jets up to intercept. They were only put on alert. Hello 9/11 the hijackers didn't communicate with the ground at least purpously. I thought procedures have changed since then. The 9/11 jets were out of communication for 30-40 minutes after hijacking. You would think we wouldn't be making the same mistakes.
