Key has this nice habits of taking real world locations and using them as inspirations. FE Kanon takes place in moriguchi japan.

They do this to set up the notion of real world with elements of fantasy to them.

If you will forgive me a second...

It allows me to indulge in a fantasy that there is something supernatural to the world.Then the fantasy ends and I take away a few good stories and notions of life.

Interestingly enough though, the knowledge that miracles are something natural and man made makes the whole experience more enjoyable.
