Douglass Watson's Final Scene as Mac Cory, 1989

I just this moment realized that it's been almost 20 years since this scene originally aired: Douglass Watson's final scene as Mac Cory, circa April 1989. Fittingly, his final scene was with his on-screen love interest of 16 years Victoria Wyndham, and the final line of dialogue he spoke as Mac (adjusted to coincide with the show's then-upcoming silver anniversary), "Twenty-five of the happiest years of my life, thanks to you, darling," was addressed to her Rachel.

Rachel with Carl was great, and a stroke of genius from the writers. Turning bitter enemies into passionate lovers, one redeemed by the love of Rachel just like Mac had done for her. Do you think watching Rachel wander around the Cory mansion pining way for the old days would be entertaining? She would have become a meaningless character.
