Well he did have surgery on his vocal chords. He sings to support his family, and also the riches
of this world. His motivation for example would be one leg in the riches of this world, and one leg in God. You can only choose one side.

The phrase "going through the motions" means doing everyday monotonous tasks. For example, stocking shelves at a grocery store in a robotic fashion doesn't require any enthusiasm, it's merely a boring repetitive task.

The person singing wants something more out of life than just waking up, going to work/church, and then going home to sleep. He's searching for meaning in his life.

This song is the inspiration for me to meet God & Jesus. They love us, why don't we love them?
