The first launch of the Ariane 5 ECA on 11 December 2002 was aborted soon after launch due to a problem with the nozzle of the Vulcain 2 engine. Since then changes have been made to the nozzle and numerous tests carried out by Snecma, the maker of the engine, to ensure that the qualification flight at the beginning of 2005 will be a success.
