Following Rio's selection to host the 2016 Olympics, decades of housing rights were immediately at stake for Rio's favela communities. More than eve, squatter communities in Rio de Janeiro are threatened with eviction by the authorities for the development of their land into infrastructure for the Olympic Games of 2016 or because they are deemed to live in "at-risk" areas.
Catalytic Communities will work with communities marked for displacement by providing them with media training and equipment to advocate for formal property rights. Media will capture human stories, legal & political processes surrounding struggles for property recognition before the Olympics. Our goal is to help these communities not only remain standing before the Olympics, but create a more sustainable path to urbanization in Rio de Janeiro.
Catalytic Communities is applying for the Changemakers Competition: Property Rights for All! to help fund Film4Rio's audio-visual trainings, local and international media distribution.
