This umbrella dance was presented by Formosa Folk Dance Group at Sister Cities Multicultural Evening 2006, Sydney Australia.

Taiwan is a subtropical island, so it has a lot more rain than Australia. When it rains, you can see the scenery of many beautiful umbrellas carried by people. In the early days, the umbrellas are made of bamboo frames covered with paper and the paper has beautiful painting and is coated with a layer of oil to keep it dry. Nowadays, paper umbrellas are not used for rain any more, but the painting and design of paper umbrellas have become part of our arts and culture. This dance demonstrates the scenery of rainy days in 1950's in Taiwan when the streets and the sky were covered by many beautiful umbrellas.
