@MrColoradowilderness The best place to start is to find a local ham radio club. Try to google words such as ham, radio, club and your location.

I own two police scanners. I really enjoy them a lot, but don't listen to them all the time, because you will get depressed by what you hear after while.

I'm definitely interested in HAM and CW as well. I know a guy who knows a guy who runs a semi-local radio club and has been doing it for many years. We've already talked about getting in touch to discuss all things HAM as an introductory thing, let's hope something comes out of it!
