  • Publicly available documents indicate that, if chemical weapons outlawed after WW1 were not dropped from aeroplanes, it was only because the means of delivery had yet to be perfected (gas shells were used by groundbased artillery). Churchill strongly advocated the use of chemical weapons: I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas, he stated. I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes.

  • TE Lawrence wrote a letter to the Times that was very critical of British behaviour in Mesopotamia, it could just as easily been written to Tony Blair 80 years later.

  • Did you know that Winston Churchill was the first person to give order for chemical weapons to be used against the Kurds?

  • He wanted to bomb them with it to "instill a lively terror" (his words) but couldn't because the technology did not exist, so yes, kind of.

His efforts during WW2 are more notable in this instance for the culmination of that era .... the Nuremburg Tribunals which lead to the UN Charter & international law which Howard (who has never seen war) among others have dismantled.

Habaniya was the base he wanted to do it from.

  • Churchill selected Arthur 'bomber' Harris in command of the operation. Harris wrote: "The Arab and the Kurd now know what real bombing means in casualties and damage. Within 45 minutes a full-size village can be practically wiped out and a third of the inhabitants killed or injured by four or five machines. Harris achieved this effect by combining large blast-bombs & then sowing 1000s phosphorus bombs into buildings. This is an extreme form of terrorism, a WMD on any reasonable definition.

  • Thats dead right - they even taxed the 'Iraqi's' to pay for these attrocities.
