Today we are going to show you the install of part number 18172. It is a 4 pole wiring harness which needs to be hardwired through the vehicle. It is not vehicle specific but we will be showing the the typical application of it. The vehicle we will be using is a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. The wiring is located behind the paneling here. In here we will pull apart the covering here and get to the all different kinds of wiring. Too find out what color does what we will need a test light. You connect it to a wire and turn on one function at a time. Running lights are on as we touch the wires with the wire tester to find the action of each wire. Now that we know which one is the running lights circuit on your 4 pole. We will go ahead and start with the running lights, and to verify we will turn off the running lights and make sure that is our circuit. So we will go ahead and install the running lights to our 4 pole. On your packaging you can tell what wire does what. Green is right turn, brown is running lights, yellow is left turn and white goes to ground.
We are going to use quick connect to make a connection. Use pliers to help push it together and lock it into place. Once you are done with that it is always a good idea to check your connection on the 4 pole. Go ahead repeat this for connecting all the wires. Some types of cars have separate lights for turn signals. Basically there is one extra hook up that can be used as a converter. We do not need the converter because the car has what they call a 2 wire system. Which means the turn signals and the brake lights are combined. Which means the brake lights that stay on are the same as your turn signals. So we do not have to worry about that. One other thing is that during your install you might not find the right turn and left turn all in one spot. This is actually the exception chances are or what is typical is you start on the driver side and make all the connections you can then run your green wire back over to the passenger side and make your connection over here.
If you can not find it on the driver side then run it across and find the closest wire to the tail light. Then use the wire tester to find out which one is the wire you are looking for to make your connection. Then the last connection will be the ground, run straight to the body. Now go ahead and re test your functions on the 4 pole. To make sure your ground works you connect it to your ground wire to your 4 pole then test all of your connections. First test your running lights then you should go turn on your left turn. Right turn is next before hit your brakes to make sure they are both working. Once you have everything working you can go ahead and put all the panels back in. At this point you use your 4 pole in this trunk mounted situation like we have. We go ahead and pull it through your trunk and the door seal has plenty of cushion on it to close the trunk on it. Just stay away from the latch here and it will be fine.
