The genesis for the play-on-words project "A Cello Rondo" occurred when Ethan Winer thought it would be fun to write and record a pop tune using nothing but a single cello, make a video of the performance, and then post it on his web site. The original goal was to keep everything entirely acoustic, with no recording studio effects or other processing, but Winer quickly abandoned that idea to get more variety of sounds. Even so, everything you hear on his YouTube video was played entirely on his cello. There are 37 separate cello parts recorded on 23 tracks using 37 plug-in effects. Winer says "I don't know if I should be embarrassed to admit I spent hundreds of hours on this project, or proud to have paid so much attention to detail. You be the judge."
Winer uploaded this video to his web site in 2006 where it quickly went viral. At one point 9,000 people tried to view it at once, which shut down his entire site for three days! Winer recently posted a second, high-definition video on YouTube. The total number of views of these clips has risen to a million and a half and the end is not in sight!
In 2008, R. J. Spear, a long-time friend of Winer's, asked permission to arrange the piece for the New Violin Family Orchestra. After its first performance in 2009, the arrangement underwent further refinements and was presented again in 2011 in the performance you see here.
Enjoy!
Beautiful!
