They did that to my poor Aunt, turned her into a zombie. Used to be if any female was unruly, whether she be wife, or daughter, she could be confined in the nut house. Joe Kenney had a lobotomy done on his daughter; I suppose she was a bit high-strung, most creative people are. I am just waiting for the Christians to start burning the pagans again; man's inhumanity towards mankind flourishes with justification when you have GOD on your side.

I am a retired "nut hut" nurse who saw the damage done by ECT. I became so depressed by those observations that I had to go to work in a different area of nursing to preserve my sanity. I think that ECT is job insurance for psychiatrists. ECT can do so much damage that the patient will never recover, and the doctors have perpetual patients. I urge anyone who is considering ECT for themselves or for a family member to RUN, not walk away from the practioners of this evil and dangerous procedure.

I'm a nurse of 19 years and I read a Debbie Reynolds interview in which she talked about ECT and how much it has helped her/had a treatment recently. I decided to research it myself.....your comment helped me as I would trust your observation/experience and insight. Thanks. After all I've read I cannot see why anyone should go through this or how any good can come from it. If it works once - okay, but it won't "work" every time. Scary and should be banned IMO. Thanks again!

@platinumpenink As for "controlling" the patient who is "difficult"... ECT would not even be effective for this. It doesn't have that effect. This idea has no basis in reality.
As for treating unnecessarily for profit, why would someone so greedy choose the lowest paid specialty in medicine?
-
@platinumpenink If you believe ECT was misused on your brother and friend then speak out against misuse and fraud rather than against the life saving treatment itself. It would be the same if your brother was tortured with a cardiac defibrillator and you react by speaking out against cardiac defibrillation.

@taylornate2 Hi Taylor. That is definitely your right and that's what's great about this country. But, because there is the highest rate of insurance fraud, for example, in the psychiatric industry, there are people who will do ECT on patients, a) for the profit and b) to "control" the patient who is being 'difficult.'
I have seen that first hand myself with my oldest brother and a close friend. And that, for me, is truth also.

@platinumpenink I worked for a short time on the psychiatric floor of a hospital and I have also experienced a loved one being committed. I have administered ECT and have seen its positive and negative effects. I'm not sure how you can say I've been "misinformed" by first hand experience...
ECT is considered when the positive effects outweigh the negative. It saves lives. If I was offered $25k to take a treatment I would refuse it as well. I would most definitely take it to save my life.

@taylornate2 Hey Taylor. Do you work in a psychiatric hospital or have you had a loved one committed to one? Those are a couple of reasons that I could think of that would make a person so exposed to misinformation, such as you spoke of.
Dennis Clarke went on the Donahue show years ago to debate on just this subject. After the "Dr." went on about how "safe" ECT is, Dennis offered him a check for $25k to take the treatment.
The Doc refused in a panic'd state. Not so safe after all, huh, doc?

My ex had both knees replaced in 1 year. She also lost her job.
Her doctor convinced her she was depressed and put her on antidepressants. She started having nightmares. They doubled the dose. She became obsessed with suicide. They hospitalized her and raised the dose again. She became psychotic. They gave her electro-shock every few days for months. Finally family managed to get her released and weaned her off of the drugs.
Now she's "normal", but seriously damaged from the shocks.

@spgrk Well said.

@Turpsup Exactly. Most of public opinion on this treatment is based on fiction.

@EphemeralShine ECT is a life-saving treatment for major depression. It is not used for "brainwashing or something". Patients are informed of the risks and benefits and it is their choice to have the treatment or not. It is done under anesthesia and is no more barbaric or inhumane than having a surgery to remove a tumor.
It is only used to save lives, not to alter someone who is "different". ECT today is very different from how it was many years ago.
