don't forget that Coltrane's wife was Alice Coltrane, a GREAT jazzist too...
i don't know if she was the mother of Ravi, but sure he is growed up deep in the music all around him....
but, let me say: John was a different size of musician...
in the story of modern music, maybe you can nominate 4-5 other ones like John Coltrane.
there are hundreds of great musician, but few real genius like him...

ravi's got like a cooler taste than his dad. check out In Flux, a cd that i found and love it to death. it really is a totally different voice but it's an amazing voice. brilliant

Yes, john coltrane found a very strong appreciation and liking in eastern music such as the music of Ravi Shankar. So im 99% sure he named Ravi after Ravi Shankar.
