SYNOPSIS:
The Battlefield - typical back yard rugby and dreams of most children of New Zealand to be top rugby players. The boy, Ethan Bai wears a significant shirt with Canterbury colours - in special recognition of Christchurch, which lost its role as a host city for RWC 2011 following February's tragic earthquake. Music by: Tiki Taane feat. Optimus Gryme - My Lion.

The Prize - acknowledgements of rugby greats from around the world and the Rugby World Cup. Orchestral arrangement by Victoria Kelly. Performed by The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

The Anthem - a New Zealand and Pacific feel to the RWC Anthem "World in Union". Sung by Ria Hall & Evander Folau - superb vocalists!!

After watching that, I can say that no matter what London does in 2012 or England do in 2015, they will not be the laughing stock. The opening to this with the boy running was cringey.

@missownz Who's laughing you ask? The directors of all other opening displays. Don't get me wrong, the ideas were fantastic it's just the way they were enacted. For example the first idea with the bot was clever but the way how it was all in slow motion made it unspectacular and cringe worthy.

@16MattC I don't think we concern ourselves over what "other directors of other opening displays" think?! If we did, then it might not have happened at all. Not everybody appreciates the same things in life so if it was "unspectacular and cringe worthy" as you call it, that's your opinion but in New Zealand, we don't see it like that. We appreciate and are very proud of our diverse heritages and cultures and this was all about showcasing that. Anybody who thinks otherwise are just jealous.

This is awesome. New Zealand should host the next commonwealth games. Australia hosted it before and their opening ceremony doesn't even match this, this is far better.

Unspectacular & Cringe worthy? The Boy running was one of the best parts. As a kid growing up I would dream of being in a world cup scoring the winning try for the All Blacks for New Zealand. I understood the entire preformance & it was AMAZING! The Director captured the true special nature in the opening ceremony & the timing of the preformances were insyc & on time just as the All Blacks did to France in the Final : Boooooooooooooommm!!!!

Each country that hosts the Rugby World Cup does an outstanding display in the openings and closing ceremonies. As the song says "We come together as one to enjoy, play a great game of rugby.
