I shot this split screen sequence to be edited in two different ways, with two separate outcomes, the other being more ambiguous. I still question whether I chose the right one to put into the movie, because Sean is the kind of predator who would knowingly sleep with Paul, and then deny it in the morning. Eventually he would believe his own lie, which is a very Bateman character trait.
The film was nominated by GLAAD as most outstanding film, in 2002. I believe Ian gave a very deep, and brave performance, and he was a pleasure to work with, always inquisitive and seeking a unique perspective of motivation. By the way, we did MANY takes for this scene. We were shooting it all day long.
Note: I am the director of The Rules of Attraction (2002) and this clip is fair use under U.S. copyright law because it is (1) non-commercial, (2) transformative in nature, (3) uses no more of the original work than necessary for the video's purpose, and (4) does not compete with the original work and could have no negative affect on it's market.
