New Version - A very sad, but beautiful, song. One of the best renditions that I know by the Three Irish Tenors. I put together the clips of the real thing: World War I, Gallipoli and Sulva Bay...
I published this before, but this version is in Widescreen, in better quality with corrected subtitles.

Brilliant video editing John to one of my favourite songs by Eric Bogle. Regarding the sound track: well everyone has their favourite version it's personal choice. I had gathered all the material together to edit a version myself, but having watched your edit, I have put my own material to bed: yours is a wonderful edit my friend! I would be interested to know what editing software you are using? Again, a wonderful, professional job well done!! Added to my list of favourites.

Thank you very much for the compliments. It feels good to receive appreciation! The editing software I used to put together this clip is Sony Vegas Professional which, to my opinion, is at least as good but definitely more user friendly than Adobe Premiere. The stills and video clips themselves were gathered through research on the internet and from my own WWI collection of videos.

It was Suvla Bay not Sulva; Eric Bogle's version is much better; raw and spare without the melodramatic strings. War is hell but it is better than the alternative, slavery under the heel of an alien ideology, The following words from Ataturk will never make up for the loss of life but they are beautiful " To those heroes that shed their blood..you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country, and are in peace; having lost your lives on this land you have become our sons as well. "

Correction noted. I personally usually prefer raw versions of narrative songs, a good example is Bob Dylanin in his acoustic days. However, in this tune I got carried away by the thoughtful and penetrating rendition as well as the enhancing warm voice of John McDermott. Even though I know there are still a few text corrections to be made, I will just leave it be. The reason is that Youtube does not allow for correction or replacement, that I know of. And having 3 versions is a bit much.

Ah well, I would suggest you make your own clip and put the correct subtitles in.

Never forget what Ataturk, the first president of modern day Turkiye, said about those buried in the cemeteries at Galipoli...

"There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us, Where they lie side by side here in this country of ours, You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away

your tears; Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace after having lost their lives on this land, They have become our sons as well."

    Gazi Mustafa Kemal ATATURK

Surely you are not serious. Turkey restricts free speech in regard to Ataturk. He contributed nothing to the Korean War, he had been dead more than 10 years.

That's fine, Ataturk was many things but he was not a politician, at least not as we have them now. The man was iron hard and absolutely devastating as a general, and he did very extreme things, but he made a modern nation of Turkey. He broke from old traditions and founded a secular and far more free country than he began with. Look at the Turkish contributions to the Korean War, if nothing else. The world owes Ataturk respect for that, of no other reason.

I graduated from one of the best high schools in Turkey, whose senior students went volunteerly to Gallipoli in 1915. They all KIA on May 19th at 3.30 am. Therefore there are no class of 1915 graduates! In Memoriam, the two big clocks in the building are always show 3.30. Like Atatürk said, "There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us" RIP to all! (Great song by the way! It made me cry.)

I wonder how long it will be before some of our young people will ask why are they marching in this parade. There are no longer many vets alive from the last world war, and unfortunatly many people still don't recognize the brave men who fought in Viet Nam. They like to consider this war the mistake we made. My husband was in Viet Nam and until his passing, he supported this war no matter what others say.
