i think that tim wrote this song for a friend who comitted suicide. and then the video fits the song pretty much perfectly. you see a guy who commited suicide and little pieces of a letter propably some kind of note in which he wants to apologize and explain why he commited suicide.
just my view, it can be totally wrong

One quick remark, it is NOT a Christian's duty to save people. As stated at the end of the book of John, it is our duty to tell the world about Jesus, but ultimately, it is up to God to do the saving. I didn't die us; Jesus did. I do like what else you said though.
