@GuitarNoob101 Sam Harris is not a moral philosopher and it shows. It completely amazes me that someone with no moral training has the temerity to write a book/deliver lectures on a topic he's so ignorant about. All he is doing is talking about how science gives us information that could be useful in helping us pursue certain goals - goals that we consider it morally right to pursue. Er, yes. How does that show morality to be consistent with atheism? It doesn't. He's an IDIOT.

@GuitarNoob101 You assume - on the basis of nothing at all - that my definition of 'rightness' is based on belief in God. No it isn't. I'm not religious. In fact, I'm quite unlike most of those who believe in God. I was a fully paid up atheist until I encountered two ARGUMENTS for God's existence. I had, and have, no preconceived idea of God that I'm trying to get the evidence to fit. I work the other way around.
So none of your points are good ones - you're addressing adiffernt person

@Clear404 (part 2/2) I think you would be interested to listen to some of Sam Harris' lectures on the "moral landscape". He shows very intuitively how morality has a secular foundation, and why we should acknowledge that. Let me know what your thoughts are on it:

@Clear404 Your definition of "rightness" is VERY narrow, and is entirely based on your belief in God as a moral being. First, which god? Or gods?
Second, "religious" morality has changed through history, so there is no basis to believe that it gives you a strong foundation. Religious moral teachings have changed as society has changed, not visa-versa. We can plainly see this by such things as the bible's (and Jesus') endorsement of slavery and numerous other intolerable behaviors.

If you believe some things are right and others wrong, and also believe God does not exist, then you have inconsistent beliefs. Rightness and wrongnes are incompatible with atheism, for rightness refers to the property of being willed by God. Thus if God does not exist, nothing can be right or wrong.
If you do not think 'rightness' refers to such a property, tell me what it does refer to and I'll then show you why you're wrong.

Zinnia Killing isn't wrong, it's just less right.

BTW saying there are more Christians in jail is deceptive and misleading considering that the majority of Americans are Christians so obviously it stands to reason that most of the prison population would also be Christian but you deliberately tried to use this as proof that Atheists are more law abiding which is a cunts trick.

WTF is this abomination? You call Christians idiots yet this idiot can't decide what gender it is. Also a persons religious beliefs has absolutely nothing to do with their intelligence and I find those who call Christians idiots are sad little insecure people who are seeking validation to feel better about themselves.

You are a bit ironic to play the musical score of one who disagrees with your statement. Did you do this to diss Beethoven's beliefs or did you read in scripture where is states "The fool says in his heart that their is no God"
I'm not reading any of the other comments on this below, I am just going to say THANK YOU! This put my own personal thoughts into a voice. Why is it ok for "God" to kill? Exactly. Excellent analogy on "God".
